A wise man once said that if you keep a banana and money in front of a monkey and ask it to choose, the monkey will definitely choose the banana, not knowing that money can buy as many bananas as possible.
That is how it is in the lives of many human beings. Some people prefer to continue working and earning a salary or peanut income instead of gradually using their energy to build opportunities that could eventually change their lives.
Hard work does not always guarantee prosperity. It depends on the direction in which the hard work is applied and the different fields of life.
For example, a footballer’s hard work can increase his personal career, improve his performance, and attract better offers from different teams and investors. This is different from the hard work of an employee who solely depends on a monthly salary for survival.
In my opinion, some of the reasons why many people remain poor despite working hard are as follows:
1. Psychological Mentality
Many people invest only what is left after spending. Some even say they do not have enough money to invest, while others keep procrastinating until tomorrow, next month, or next year.
These thoughts and habits can keep a person moving around in the same circle without making meaningful progress.
The way you think about money can affect the way you use it. If every income you receive is immediately spent without any form of planning, saving, investment, or learning, you may continue working hard without improving your financial situation.
2. Exchanging Time for Money Without Investing in Valuable Assets
Many workers receive a monthly salary by exchanging their time and energy for money. However, some spend almost everything they earn on things that do not help improve their financial future.
This is common in our daily society. You work for someone by giving your time and energy, and at the end of the month, you receive a limited income. You then use the money to buy phones, food, clothes, cars, watches, and other things that may lose value over time.
There is nothing wrong with buying things you need or enjoy. The problem begins when all your income is spent on things that do not create any future financial value.
Instead of investing in valuable assets, such as stocks, real estate, or other legitimate financial opportunities, or acquiring digital skills that can improve your earning capacity, some people spend everything they earn. When the money is finished, they begin to wonder why they are broke again.
Some people may not understand this until they no longer have the same energy or strength to continue working.
So, despite all your hard work, you may still remain poor if all your income is continually spent without building anything that can create future value.
3. Not Acquiring Financial Education
A wise man once said, “If what you know is true, why are you still where you are?”
Just as education helps human beings overcome ignorance, financial education can help people make more calculated financial decisions that may affect their future.
As the world continues to change, people must continue learning, adapting, and understanding new opportunities. We now live in a modern and technological society where the way people work, earn money, invest, and create opportunities continues to change.
Some people work hard but refuse to learn. Others learn but refuse to consistently take action.
To make progress in life, it is not enough to learn and then abandon what you have learned. You need to gradually practise, improve, and take action until you begin to see results.
4. Do Not Live by Motivation Alone; Live by Discipline
Your energy may increase when someone successful or influential comes out to motivate you. You may feel inspired and ready to change your life.
However, motivation does not always last.
Discipline is what keeps you moving when nobody is motivating you. It is discipline that helps you continue working on your goals even when you are tired, discouraged, or when there is no one around to encourage you.
Motivation comes and goes, but discipline can keep you moving.
You must continue working on your goals, or you may spend your entire life working hard for someone else without building something of your own.
5. Visibility Distinguishes Many Successful People
What differentiates many footballers, musicians, entrepreneurs, and other wealthy people is that their work becomes visible.
People know them because their talent, skills, products, or services are exposed through different platforms, channels, and digital tools.
Sometimes, the hard work of a person becomes valuable because millions of people can see it.
Anything you do that remains completely hidden from the world may limit the number of people who can discover and benefit from it.
For example, an employee may work hard for many years, but if nobody knows what he can do beyond his workplace, his opportunities may remain limited. His employer may continue benefiting from his hard work while he receives only his regular salary.
This is why visibility matters in the modern world.
Sometimes, you need to build things that can travel far and reach millions of people without requiring you to continually exchange all your time and energy for money.
6. Your Friends, Mentorship, and Environment Matter
I have had many friends, but it was not until I met a friend who began teaching me about finance, blogging, and digital skills that I started seeing certain realities differently.
That experience opened my mind and helped me begin to understand life from a different financial perspective.
Some of the other people I knew were mainly focused on hustling without proper direction or structure. Some were focused on things such as women, drinks, smoking, and other temporary pleasures.
This is why you must pay attention to your environment.
Your friends can influence the direction of your life. Mentors can introduce you to knowledge and opportunities that you may never have discovered on your own.
Friends are socially valuable assets because they can influence your thinking, your decisions, and your direction in life.
You cannot live completely in isolation. The people around you can either expose you to new possibilities or keep you trapped in the same cycle.
What You Should Know
It is not only about hard work.
It is also about time, chance, what you study, what you know, the right friends, mentorship, and the environment around you.
It is about learning how to invest in valuable assets, no matter how small you start.
Do not live on motivation alone because motivation comes and goes. Stay disciplined. Stay focused. Continue learning and gradually take action.
I am not against working and earning a monthly salary. There is nothing wrong with having a job.
What I am against is spending all your valuable time and income on depreciating assets and things that do not improve your financial future.
You can still enjoy life, buy the things you need, and take care of yourself. But you should also think about building something that can continue creating value in the future.
This may include learning digital skills, investing carefully in legitimate opportunities, studying stocks, real estate, or other financial assets after gaining proper knowledge and understanding the risks involved.
At the end of the day, working hard is important, but the direction of your hard work also matters.
Finance is not just about making money. It is about understanding reality.
There is still more to reveal.
